It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute. Eric Bellmann was born in Rochester, New York and studied at the Rochester Institute of Technology. In 1965, he was the first to graduate with an MFA in Printmaking. Although Bellmann is known primarily for his printmaking, he is also admired for his drawing work and photography. He is a two-time prize winner of the Finger Lakes Annual, one award for drawing and the other for printmaking.
